Very high "Original Price" is not verified by Camel price-history chart

Dear Camels,

I just sent feedback to Newegg berating them for frequently displaying very high “Original Prices” that never existed.

At least, according to the data I’m getting from the Camel price-history charts, there are frequent instances of high Original Prices that don’t appear to have ever existed.

For instance, Newegg’s Item#:N82E16875991014, screenshot attached.

According to Camel, the price has been $49.99 for All time. Yet Newegg claims an original price of $119.99.

If there’s something I’m not understanding, then I might owe Newegg an apology.

Otherwise, the “savings” of $70 is False Advertising.

If it turns out that Camel has assisted me in helping to renew the credibility of [my favorite] Newegg website, then you guys will have provided a significant consumer service.

Thanks,
-Neil-

PS: Of course, for people that don't have CamelCamelCamel, they'll never know that the high Original Prices are boldfaced fabrications.

Neil, the origin of "original price" listings can be difficult to discern. Is it the MSRP, the first price at which a retailer sold the product, the last price prior to the current sale, etc? For example, I know Amazon likes to jack up their prices to inflate the % off during sales, and will use that high price as the "original price".

On our side of the equation, one must remember that we haven't been tracking Newegg products since Newegg came into being, so in some cases it's possible that the listed "original price", albeit very high relative to the current price, may have actually been the price of the product at some point.

That said, my general opinion (based on our years of collecting Amazon data) is that retailers do manipulate prices and that includes the "original price" listings. One good reason to use the Camel is, as you've experienced, to verify these listings and avoid being manipulated yourself!

I hope this answers your question. If not, I am happy to try to clarify things further.

    Hi Dan.

Thanks for the quick reply and the Camal Charts. Love 'em.

Yes, now it's clearer to me that the definition of Original Price is open to some poetic license.

Please keep up the good work.
